POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (May 28, 2024) – From the front row of the grid Chris Dyson took the green flag at Lime Rock Park looking to become the first four-time Trans Am winner in the New England track’s 57-year history with the series. But less than 200 yards down the track, while braking hard for the race’s first turn, the three-time defending series champion’s hopes for another victory at his home track took a big hit. Second-row starter Adam Andretti accidently but stoutly hit the rear bumper of Dyson’s #16 GYM WEED Ford Mustang. The blow sent Dyson’s car spinning off the track and by the time he got back on the racing surface Dyson was dead last.
The rest of the 100-mile sprint Dyson was playing catchup, carving his way through the field – eventually to second place behind Paul Menard – before the race ended with a full-course yellow.
“I just drove as hard as I could the whole way,” Dyson said after climbing from his car. “We were fortunate to avoid a major setback in the championship points battle. But it’s doubly unfortunate because we had a winning car. The incident at the start was very disappointing, not just for the team, but 100+ family and friends who turned out to cheer us on. Adam (Andretti) and I have been great friends for a long time and I thought it was nice that in the winners’ circle Adam publicly took responsibility for what happened.”
Dyson had dominated practice, posting the fastest lap by almost a second, and in qualifying on a wet track lost the pole to Tomy Drissi by 0.03 seconds. “We really have our new car running great,” Dyson said. “We certainly showed it this afternoon. Pittsburgh, where we are racing next month, marks the halfway point in the season. We will be looking for a good battle there and for the rest of the season, particularly with Paul and Adam.”
Matos Dominates Lime Rock TA2 Race
Driving a Concord American Flagpole sponsored Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang, Rafa Matos on Saturday scored his second CUBE 3 Architecture TA2-class win of the season and the 22nd of the two-time champion’s career in the class. It was a dominant performance. Matos won the pole and comfortably led every lap of the race.
“The Nitro Motorsports people gave me a great car,” Matos said. “Thanks to them and thanks to Chris Dyson and Concord American Flagpole for making this possible.”
Matos’ next race is June 20-23, when the TA2 class races at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, supporting the headline TA class.
