POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 12, 2021) – “To finish first, first you must finish.” That succinct seven-word sentence has been around for many decades because it is as axiomatic today as it has been since the dawn of motorsports more than 120 years ago. So, few were surprised when Scott Halupke, the chief of technical services for 2021 Trans Am by Pirelli Series champion Chris Dyson’s CD Racing team, was named by the series as its winner of the second annual Sunoco Donohue Technical Excellence Award.
“This is a great professional and personal honor,” said Halupke, CD Racing’s road-racing technical leader and a member of the Dyson organization since 2002. “But I also receive it on behalf of everyone on the team whose efforts brought CD Racing both the driver’s title with Chris and the team title as well.”
Dyson credits Halupke, along with the rest of the CD Racing crew he leads, with providing the support Dyson required to dominate this year’s edition of the legendary 55-year-old series, winning seven of the season’s 11 races aboard his #20 ALTWELL CBD Ford Mustang. “In previous seasons we always had a car that was fast enough to compete for the win,” said Dyson, who finished third, second and again third in his trio of previous full-time seasons in America’s premier sedan road-racing series. “But as a team we needed to deal with some technical issues that were causing us to drop out of races in a series that heavily penalizes DNFs. Scotty led the team in addressing those issues and the results speak for themselves.”
Halupke, 60, began his motorsports career in 1978 as an 18-year-old hanging around racetracks and serving as a gopher – running errands and performing other tasks as needed for short-staffed teams. As his knowledge and skills grew, Halupke served in a number of ever more advanced full-time positions in the sport before settling in at the Dyson organization nearly 20 years ago. In addition to overseeing the mechanical wellbeing of the team’s pair of Mustang race cars in the shop and at the track, Halupke works with the team’s drivers as they interpret data downloaded from the race cars after every session and determine adjustments that will improve the cars foe the following on-track sessions.
Sunoco Donohue Technical Excellence Award
Initiated in 2020 and presented annually, it is “presented to the individual in the Trans Am Championship that best emulates racing legend Mark Donohue’s approach to racing through the use of engineering, analytics, and data technology, to gain a winning advantage.”
Donohue, who in 1972 with Sunoco sponsorship scored Roger Penske’s first Indy 500 victory, was a leading driver/engineer in the Trans Am series in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He combined world-class driving skills with engineering expertise to generate innovative technical solutions that in turn produced winning race cars.
