POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 20, 2024) – Winning three consecutive Trans Am by Pirelli championships hasn’t taken the edge off Chris Dyson’s competitive attitude. This weekend at Sebring International Raceway he begins his campaign for a fourth title in the series’ headline TA class.
“I feel more ready for the season to start than I have for years,” Dyson said following a recent highly productive test at NOLA Motorsports Park, where the CD Racing team focused on both reliability and performance improvements on the Riley chassis the team introduced last season for the #16 GYM WEED Ford Mustang. “The new chassis showed great promise last year. But the goal was winning the championship, so during the season we focused on the Meissen chassis that had already brought us two titles. With the third championship won, this winter we could turn our full attention to developing the new car. I’m satisfied that we have the reliability that’s critical for a successful championship run and that we’ve unlocked some of the new car’s performance potential. We have been working really hard to hit the ground running this season.”
Dyson’s feat of winning three consecutive championships last year put him in elite all-time company. In the Trans Am Series’ nearly six decades of existence, only two other drivers have ever won as many consecutive titles. Dyson acknowledges that while he and his team have been operating at very high levels the last few seasons, he recognizes the consistent effort it has taken and notes that there has been no let-up in this off-season. He is determined and focused on what lays ahead in the new year. “All tables are reset and it’s time to start another chapter,” Dyson said. “I’m grateful for this; it’s still as much of a thrill as it’s ever been.”
He predicted that the 2024 TA field will be very strong and the competition highly competitive. “Once again, there are going to be a lot of talented drivers in fast cars at Sebring,” he said. “There will be six or seven legitimate potential winners this weekend. I expect Paul Menard will be very fast and now that Tomy Drissi is running his own program I think he will really competitive for the entire season. Then we will have known quantities like Boris Said, Wally Dallenbach and of course our dear friend Adam Andretti turning up. I think we are going to have some tremendous battles out there.”
Brabham’s Role in 2024
Initially CD Racing will focus on chassis development and field one entry for 2024, with the option of adding a second car as the season progresses.
“Matty Brabham did a great job supporting our championship run last season, both in a second entry as needed and in testing,” Dyson said. “I’m pleased Matty will have an ongoing role with the team, at the very least in helping with the R&D of the new car. I expect the front end of the TA field will be more competitive than ever, every weekend. A car that’s good enough to win this weekend at Sebring won’t necessarily be fast enough when we race at Lime Rock on Memorial Day.”
CD Racing’s Concord American Flagpole Association Expands to TA2 with Matos;
Concord American Flagpole, lead partner of CD Racing’s successful open-wheel short-track racing program, will also have primary brand placement for the 2024 Trans Am TA2 campaign of two-time (2018 & 2021) class champion Rafa Matos in collaboration with reigning TA2 champions Nitro Motorsports.
“Rafa is a terrific driver and I’m pleased to have the opportunity to bring our Concord American Flagpole affiliation to support him as he goes for a third TA2 championship,” Dyson said. “Rafa shares the record for career TA2 wins and I hope this year he will add to his total. Rafa and I are both excited to share some ‘double-podium’ occasions this year together between our TA and TA2 programs.”
Sprint Car Team Kicks off 2024 with Solid Florida Trip; Silver Crown on the Horizon
Dyson noted that CD Racing’s 2024 short-track program has gotten off to a strong start with Justin Peck driving the team’s Concord American Flagpole sprint car in Florida. “The team has been competitive and getting stronger every race,” Dyson said. “We have been in the mix every night and had podiums. The wins will come.”
Once again the CD Racing team will contest the dirt track events on the USAC Silver Crown Championship tour in 2024, with Brady Bacon returning to pilot the #9 Concord American Flagpole entry.
