POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (May 1, 2022) – For the second weekend in a row Chris Dyson racked up a perfect Trans Am race meet score, capturing the pole in his #20 ALTWELL Ford Mustang, and then setting the fastest race lap on his way to a flag-to-flag triumph in the 100-mile sprint at Sonoma Raceway, his fourth win in the five races run as the season approaches the halfway mark.
Not that it was an easy run at the physically demanding tight and hilly California wine country circuit. As was the case last weekend at Laguna Seca, Dyson was pressed the entire length of the race by fellow front-row qualifier Tomy Drissi, also his closest pursuer in the series title chase.
“I’ve got to catch my breath a bit,” Dyson said as he climbed out of his car following a race that ran without the benefit of breaks provided by full-course caution periods behind a pace car. “Tomy pushed me the whole way. He was breathing down my neck all 40 laps. I tried to gap him, but I couldn’t, especially with the traffic. So, I just had to put my head down and go as hard as I could. This is probably the most physically demanding track we will see in our cars. It was a marathon the whole way.”
Dyson’s Trans Am win this weekend adds to his family’s successful history at Sonoma that began with Chris’s dad Rob’s 1986 victory in a Porsche 962 during the IMSA GTP era, and continued with a pair of Dyson Racing wins during the 1990s and a podium for Chris in a Lola-Mazda during his run to the 2003 American Le Mans Series championship
Greg Pickett On Podium In Second ALTWELL Entry
Dyson pronounced himself more than pleased with the podium finish of his ALTWELL business partner, Greg Pickett. At 75 the ageless veteran and now three-time Trans Am West champion has raced in – and won in – five different decades over the history of America’s longest-running road racing series. Pickett, who ran his own ALTWELL Ford Mustang from under the CD Racing canopy this weekend, came out on top of a race-long battle for third place with series regular Ken Thwaits. Pickett’s overall finish was also a first place in the concurrent Trans Am West race.
“When we won here last year Greg was the first person to greet me when I drove into the winner’s circle,” Dyson said. “I predicted even before we left for the West Coast that this time at Sonoma I’d have to beat Greg to stand at the top of the podium. And that prediction came true. I can’t tell you what a thrill it was to be sharing GYMWEED together at the post-race celebration with him. The Dyson and Pickett families have been great friends, and often on-track competitors since I was a kid.”
Consistent Performance Brings Masaood Fourth-Place Finish
Dyson’s CD Racing teammate Humaid Masaood, who was second at Sonoma last year, had a steady race in his #21 allgram Ford Mustang on his way to fourth place in the TA class this time around. “I’d hoped we could duplicate our results here from last year and our good on-track result from last weekend (where he was second under the checker before a penalty for avoidable contact), but we were just a bit off the pace Chris was setting. Now I’m looking forward to Lime Rock later this month.”
Memorial Day At Lime Rock Park Will Mark Mid-Point of 2022 Trans Am Season
Victory at Lime Rock Park last year marked the start of a three-race winning streak that launched Dyson toward his championship title. This year the Memorial Day race at the challenging New England circuit marks the half-way point in the season. “Lime Rock is our home track,” Dyson noted. “The Dyson family has so much racing history there. It’s just an hour from our race shop, and Lime Rock is when we get to race in front of our family and friends. We’ve had a really good first half of the season, but consistency is the key to winning the championship. We don’t have a comfortable point lead; one really bad weekend and our lead is gone.”
Silver Crown Champ Swanson Opens Title Defense Today With Doran-Dyson Racing
On his way to the 2021 USAC Silver Crown title Kody Swanson drove in the dirt races for Chris Dyson’s CD Racing Team and for the pavement races wheeled a car owned and prepared by Kevin Doran. The 13-race 2022 Silver Crown series opens today at the dirt-surfaced Terre Haute Action Track in western Indiana, where Swanson’s mount is entered under the banner of Doran-Dyson Racing.
“Kevin is a longtime friend,” Dyson said. “Doran Racing and Dyson Racing have been friendly rivals for decades in sports car racing. While the dirt car will still be run by Sean Michael out of our shop and the pavement car out of Kevin’s, it just made sense for Kody to defend his championship under the united banner of Doran-Dyson Racing. And it will be great to see the Concord American Flagpole car with a big #1 on the side of the tail.”
