POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (June 10, 2024) – Chris Dyson battled an ill-handling race car all Sunday afternoon in the Trans Am by Pirelli feature at Pittsburgh International Race Complex and still brought his #16 GYM WEED Ford Mustang home in second place behind the Mustang of Paul Menard.
Menard and his team nailed the race setup and it showed; he was never seriously challenged over the course of the 100-mile sprint.
For Dyson it was the opposite kind of afternoon. “The car was really problematic today,” he noted. “The first half of the race we were able to stay in touch with Adam (Andretti) and Paul, but as the fuel burned off the car got really challenging, and then the handling fell off a cliff. It got so difficult at the end that I had to forget about racing and just focus on bringing it home in one piece. We are going to need to check everything on the car carefully, because it was sketchy out there and we don’t need to do that again. We’ve had great cars all year at the end of every race this year so this one stands out as an exception. Moving on from this place, we will regroup and I have no doubt that we will be more competitive at Mid-Ohio.”
Matos Takes TA2 Race
Sunday morning former class champion Rafa Matos extended his 2024 season point lead as he drove his Concord American Flagpole sponsored Nitro Motorsports Ford Mustang to his third win in the past four races (and 23rd of his TA2-class career). Matos finished two seconds ahead of his Nitro Motorsports teammate Ben Maier while the team’s Tyler Kicera finished sixth.
“This was an excellent weekend for the Nitro Motorsports team,” Matos said.
Matos’ next race is June 20-23, when the TA2 class races at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio, supporting the headline TA class.
